Digital Economy Act: Not for Small ISPs and Mobile Broadband Providers

Posted by admin - May 20th, 2010

Small Wi-Fi ISPs and providers of mobile broadband will no longer have to worry about running into problems of compliance with the Digital Economy Act; Ofcom has now been provided with the task of creating a Code of Practice that will free the relevant service providers from adhering to the Act.

The Digital Economy Bill was created to clamp down on illegal activities like file sharing on the internet. But the bill meant problems in execution, because many small ISPs like Wi-Fi owners would be held accountable for the activities that occur on their networks. What is more, it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact user who indulges in an illegal download. Hence, for such service providers, compliance with the Act is difficult. These very objections, which were raised at the time of the passing of the Bill, now seem to have been taken into account, with speculation of exemptions going around.

The Digital Economy Act requires all service providers to act watchdog to the activities on their networks. The law not only necessitates warning letters to customers who cross the line, but also permits the restriction of bandwidths and temporary disconnection of the network. While such close inspection and monitoring bodes well for shutting down illegal downloading, compliance with the Act would mean trouble for a lot of ISPs and mobile broadband providers, who will therefore be relieved by the exemptions.

Users can make use of Broadband Genie for information on the UK broadband providers and mobile broadband networks; a useful resource for comparing the services and requirements of the ISPs and worth a look at for the mobile broadband pay as you go offers - handy for web browsing on the move.

Get an Internet Phone to Make Cheap International Calls

Posted by admin - February 6th, 2010

When it comes to VoIP there are several basic service provider options: free services or paid providers which are likely to have a range of pricing options, fixed line VoIP or mobile VoIP. All making cheap international calls much easier. Choosing which is right for you depends on how you plan to use VOIP. If you just want to chat with friends and family over the World Wide Web, a free service may be all you need. Alternatively if what you’re after is another option to normal phone service, however, it’s worth thinking about a mobile VoIP service with a paid package deal.

When it comes to VoIP there is a multitude of choices. To determine which is the best service for your money, you must decide which services you need, and whether you want to get rid of your existing telephone service provider completely. Most VOIP service providers offer package plans with free calls to whatever overseas country you are mainly calling. Almost all providers offer free call waiting, call display, and conference call services.

Even though the basic package for a similar fee is the same with most providers there is intense competition between VOIP service providers, with every one aiming to offer services that distinguish them from their competitors. To make the correct decision, you’ll have to review several deals to find the best for your needs. For example, if you make a lot of overseas calls, a package that includes overseas calls makes sense. Or if people are always calling you from the same city, get a deal that offers a specific phone number that allows people to call you at that local rate.

Factors such as the reliability and customer service levels are other fundamental factors when selecting a VOIP provider. You can find all this info from reviews on the internet or by asking your friends which providers they use. One idea is to find a company providing a money-back guarantee. Check before you sign up how much bandwidth is required by your VoIP service provider. If the information is not available from the company’s web site, send a note to verify that your broadband connection is sufficient for their VOIP service. Usually 128 kbps on the upload side is sufficient.

Trying to ring the emergency services in case of an emergency is one of the technical setbacks of using VoIP, because it’s hard to determine your actual location on VOIP calls. 999 calls may not be routed to the correct call center, and if they are, operators can’t determine your locale if you can’t effectively communicate.

Government Fails to Garner Support for its Anti-piracy Laws

Posted by admin - November 13th, 2009

A recent poll suggests that the government might be at a risk of decline in vote bank on account of its proposed disconnection of broadband line on suspicion of illegal file sharing by users. According to the statistics released by YouGov, a brainchild of the Open Rights Group, around 31% of the people would not vote for a government with such a harsh policy on internet. However, 16% of the people supported the policy, whereas around 14% were less likely to vote for a party with such stance. A huge majority of the public (around 70%) who were polled were against the proposal of the government to cut off broadband connection for illegal file sharers. These opponents of the plan suggested that the suspects should be given a fair trial before the court of law and that any action should be taken only after listening to the court’s verdict in the case. The idea has also been supported by Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, who believes that the proposal of the government is very harsh on the users. Killock has added that there is an instant need for business secretary Lord Mandelson to reconsider the matter and come up with an alternative policy keeping in mind the public demand. This opposition to the policy has been seconded by a number of internet providers including T-Mobile and TalkTalk, who voiced their fears of prosecution of innocent users who may fall victims to WiFi hijacking. They also added that the proposal of total internet block without a fair trial would result in huge loses to both providers as well as customers. Refer www.broadbandgenie.co.uk for provider reviews and broadband news which offer a good insight into the various ISP’s practices.

Extra Burden on Fixed Phone Line Users to Finance Digital Vision of the Government

Posted by admin - September 1st, 2009

An extra amount of six pounds per year will be imposed by way of tax by the UK government to fund its digital plans. The recent hints from treasury minister Stephen Timms that the tax plan has been abandoned thus appear to be anything but true.

Known as stealth tax, the additional 50p every month collected from fixed phone line users, which covers almost every household in the UK, will be used to subsidize the costs to be borne by the government for Next Generation Access (NGA). This method of funding was suggested for the first time in the Digital Britain report. It has however been debated upon till date in the Digital Britain Forum.

Around £150-£175 million will be collected annually by the government in order to provide internet access to everyone in the country. The government through this project wishes to end the rift between users and non-users of the internet across the country and it appears we all might have the need for 3g mobile broadband access sooner than we may have expected.

Overall, there appears to be an agreement among critics that the digital goal fixed by the government is not sufficiently progressive. Moreover, it is alleged that the government is not doing all it can to fulfil its aim. However, the authorities give the impression that they are determined to utilize ‘broadband tax‘ and the money from users of fixed lines for taking their plans forward.

Vodafone Could Become the Largest Mobile Broadband Provider in the UK

Posted by admin - July 8th, 2009

If the Financial Times report that appeared on Sunday about Vodafone buying T-Mobile is true, then it could put Vodafone and telecom regulator Ofcom on a collision course.

Vodafone already enjoys a 25% share in the mobile broadband market and if it manages to acquire T-Mobile, it could be a leader in the market by a long way with a share of about 40%. Ofcom, which has successfully managed to avoid any monopolistic situation in the market by ensuring that the share of all the big four players is almost similar, is likely to get upset over the imbalance this deal is bound to create.

Although, neither of the concerned parties has issued any clarification on the news, the rumours of T-Mobile being on sale have been doing the rounds for quite a while now. The FT in its report said that about six months back that the parent company of T-Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, had suggested that it was planning to leave the UK broadband market.

A clear signal that Deutsche Telekom wanted to sell T-mobile appeared at the beginning of this month, when a drop in the value of T-mobile was witnessed on the parent’s books. However, things have progressed significantly since then as Vodafone has joined 3 (three mobile broadband) and Orange as the contenders for T-Mobile.

Hotels Must Reduce Wi-Fi Prices for the Sake of Travellers, Says Expedia

Posted by admin - February 11th, 2009

One of the biggest problems that travellers have been facing recently is high prices for Wi-Fi access in hotels around the world. In Europe and UK, specifically the rates are extremely high. The rates vary from £0.78 per hour in Florida, U.S to £6.43 per hour in Venice, Italy. To make Wi-Fi access traveler-friendly, the famous travel website Expedia.co.uk has advised hotels to reduce its prices.

Another problem that travellers face is that of complex pricing, making it difficult to compare the rates of Wi-Fi at one hotel with another. While some charge on a per hour basis, others do it for half hour, or based on usage within a time limit. Very few places have flat day rates.

Looking at both these problems of confusing and overpriced Wi-Fi access, Alison Couper, Communications Director of Expedia, commented that Wi-Fi access needs to be simple and cost effective for all types of travellers.

She even revealed that budget hotels offer cheap or at times free broadband access and to cut down on travel expenditure, one should always go in for such hotels. The research by Expedia stated that hotels with four stars or less usually offer such facilities.

A lot of hotels also have business centres. Wi-Fi service at such hotels is usually free or tariffs are available which include Wi-Fi access. Therefore, it is always better to check about this facility before booking the hotel.
