Recommended Tips on Finding a Responsible Bank that Can Meet the Business Banking Requirements of Your Company

Posted by admin - May 14th, 2009

Finding a bank that can provide good business banking is key for the success of any business whether big or small. Why? Because smart business banking allows the cash within a business to flow, and will greatly save time and money. Any small business owner who is unsure about where to start with business banking, should read the following suggestions to get an insight into what is involved.

The first step to take before you can start open a business account is to find the right bank for your requirements. Unless they have the best deal, it is usually not wise to use your current bank for your business needs. This is because it is a good idea to keep your business and personal affairs entirely separate, and means that one bank is not in control of all your cash. There is also the fact that new banking customers frequently get better deals because of the banks being so eager to attract new business. Rivalry is intense and this can work to your advantage. Whatever bank you decide to use, it pays to look around to get the best products for your banking.

Having selected a bank you should contact them to open an account for your business. This is in all likelihood the most fundamental step, and there are a number of things you should do before you can open a bank account. For Instance, prepare a business plan to present to the bank to give them the backgound on your business and what tou hope to achieve. Additionally, if you are a new company then you will probably need to get evidence of your initial financial backing. It is quite common for your personal credit history and the history of any business partners to be investigated. When these conditions have been concluded then you will be able to open an account for your business.

The deal and the services extended will partially depend on the size of your business organisation, as well as the results of your credit checks and the evaluation of your business plan. Starting with a simple account is often the most prudent option, where you can take out money and pay in earnings. Once your business matures then you can add extra features or apply for a business loan as and when you want them

Only YOU Decide How You React - Covey Habit 1

Posted by admin - May 10th, 2009

The first Stephen Covey Habit is to “be proactive”.

Now when I first heard this I thought this basically meant “do stuff”. Proactive people to me were people who simply did things rather than sit and watch, they took the initiative. So to me this was going to be an easy one, and being the first I thought it should be.
WRONG!

Proactivity here is about choice. It’s about taking the initiative to stop - think - choose. The biggest hurdle for most of us is realising we have choice. Covey separates what happens around us from how we react to it. I’ll say that again another way, as it is extremely core to the chapter and the rest of the book:
Covey separates what happens to us from how we decide to react to it.
At first this sounds like a nice concept, but will it work in reality?

Can you believe it, as I try and write this, my son has set two electronic keyboards to continually play random tunes, it is so loud I can hardly think! So what is happening? There is a lot of noise and I am struggling to concentrate. How am I reacting? I could use my power as a parent to tell him to stop it ‘daddy is working’ or even go over and unplug it. On the other hand I could accept he wants to do something with me, talk to him about making a time that works for both of us and ask him to let me finish so we can play together sooner. Maybe he does not realise the impact of the noise on my concentration. WOW! - would you believe it, he found the noise annoying also and has just turned it off himself.

Let’s look at this as Covey would. My initial response of “TURN THAT DOWN!!!” is completely reactive. It’s the second response that Covey would describe as proactive. I took what was happening around me and chose for myself the response that best worked for me. Initially I felt I had no choice, it was so loud and I just wanted it to stop, my initial reaction was to stop it using whatever I had - in this case the authority of being the parent. How much better would have been my second choice?

Proactivity is about accepting that there is always a choice of how you react to things around you. Ok, I can hear you “But surely some things are so basic there simply is no choice”. You may not believe me now, but because we can only see through our own eyes, what we perceive as our reality, is often not the reality of others.

There is a model called Rational Emotive Therapy (RET). This is often used where people feel helpless in the face of mounting odds. It is especially effective where people feel they are being oppressed by others for no reason. The model has three steps:

What is the strongest emotion? - Depression, Anger, Fear, or something else? As a side note it can be handy to identify that Depression tends to be about the past, Anger about the present and Fear about the future. This can help guide the appropriate reaction.
What was the trigger for this emotion? Find what incident was at the start of the emotion. Often this might be “He said..” or “They decided..”. ie Actions of others. This is identifying the “have done to me” aspect that Covey uses to identify reactive responses. Here we are identifying those reactive responses to help us find proactive ones we can choose from.
What are other reasons or options? Here is where we investigate what might have driven others to make the choices they did.

Let’s look at my son’s music example from above. My strongest emotion was Anger. It was very much in the present. What was the trigger? - My son creating all the noise. Why? - He wanted me to stop working and play with him. I now have a good basis to decide how I am going to respond and be consciously proactive.

To be proactive is then to choose how we respond to what is happening around us. We need to take the initiative and not react to only what we see as the reality. Better to stop, assess and choose the response that best serves us.

Covey also talks about the concept of “Circle of Influence” and “Circle of Concern”. These are the second part of “being proactive”, and I will discuss them in “Habit 1 - Be Proactive (part b)”.

Cheers

Steve

From Failure To Victory; The Cat’s Out Of The Bag!

Posted by admin - May 8th, 2009

Did you ever think that all of the great heroes we read about may not have been particularly great men in and of themselves? They may not have been born with any great skills, talents or abilities. But, each of them did have one special quality that we would all do well to cultivate.

A Tough Nut To Crack!

Because of my passion for recording and singing I’ve had the opportunity to meet some really famous people. And, one thing I have discovered about these people is that they have a “never say quit philosophy.” They have a bull dog tenacity that would make a snapping turtle jealous.

A side thought just in case you have never heard; the saying goes that a snapping turtle, if it bites you, won’t let go till it thunders. I don’t know if it is true or not and couldn’t care less because I don’t let snapping turtles bite me. So, back to my point.

Live And Learn!

The stories I have been told by these famous people is sometimes shocking and very inspiring. I won’t mention any names but one in particular comes to mind. See if you can relate to this tragedy to triumph.

His passion was for music, as mine is, and during the early years of his struggle, to reach the top, he lived in an apartment with no bathroom. After a short while he got kicked out, which he says was not a big loss; then he lived in a convertible automobile with a leaky top.

He literally and he truthfully swears he lived off of cat food in a can for a year. It took him almost twenty years to have his first number one hit. And, that means twenty years of playing the honky tonks for peanuts with no success any where in sight.

Never Look Back!

His story really made me think; how much do we really want success? How much blood are we willing to give? What kind of a price are you willing to pay for that elusive dream that captivates and mesmerizes you?

For my friend that I’ve mentioned, there was no price too great, no sacrifice too large, no limits he placed on himself, except for breaking the law, he never crossed that line, but he was willing to pull out all stops to have what he dreamed.

His Goose Is Cooked!

His father even tried to bribe him with money to forget the crazy notion of pursuing music. He decided to stay in his leaky roof convertible and, he said by that time, he had started to like cat food. Yuk! His father said; dumb decision boy!

His father asked him; ok, how long are you going to pursue this? He told his father he had placed a limit on the timeframe and said that it was one hundred years. If he didn’t succeed after one hundred years he would quit. His father said; dumb decision boy!

Pinch Me To See If I’m Dreaming!

I tell you this story not to insinuate that this is the kind of life a person must endure in order to have great success. But, to share with you that here was an ordinary person with no extra special gifts, just a never quitting attitude, that caused him to be living his dream today.

If there is any quality that separates the successful person from the failure, it is persistence; Not talent, not ability, not education. And over and over I have been told by some big name people how hard the struggles were to reach the top.

Persistence is like the object in motion. It takes more energy to stop it than for it to continue its course. Starting the object is where most of the energy is used. And, it’s the same in pursuing success.

You Can Bet Your Bottom Dollar!

Everyone wants to be a success in life, but unless you make a commitment to never say quit, you will have a lot of opportunities to fail. The comforting thing is; life will never quit on us, it will keep presenting us with opportunities to succeed, many of which will look like you’ll be up to your neck in alligators.

You may have a problem now that you’ve tried and tried to overcome. You many have even said, “I’ve fought this thing so long.” What’s the use, I’ll never win. I have just one word of encouragement for you: Just remember; “Cat Food!”

When I first decided that I was not meant to work for someone else, a friend gave me a poem that I want to reprint here. The author of this poem is unknown, and I’m sure some of you will have seen it and I’m sure a lot of you haven’t. It was an inspiration to me when I first read it and I’ve kept a plaque of it for many years. The title is; “Don’t Quit”.

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns, as every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don’t give up though the pace seem slow, You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than, it seems to a faint and faltering man, Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor’s cup, And, he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint of the clouds of doubt. And, you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar, so stick to the fight when you’re the hardest hit, It’s when things seems worst that you must not quit. (Author Unknown)

Worth Its Weight In Gold!

If you won’t quit, your faith in yourself and the goodness of God will see you through. Remember, with you and God, you can turn failure into victory.

Leading In The Face Of Disaster

Posted by admin - May 8th, 2009

The date was Saturday, April 11, 1970, the time 13:13 CST. The event to take place was to be one of NASA’s finest hours; the launch of Apollo 13. Apollo 13 was supposed to land in the Fra Mauro area. However, an explosion on board forced the crew to circle the moon without landing.

The first two days the crew ran into a couple of minor surprises, but generally Apollo 13 was looking like the smoothest flight of the program. At 46 hours, 43 minutes Joe Kerwin, the CapCom on duty, said, “The spacecraft is in real good shape as far as we are concerned.”

At 55 hours, 46 minutes, the crew finished a 49-minute TV broadcast showing how comfortably they lived and worked in weightlessness. Nine minutes later, oxygen tank No. 2 blew up, causing the No. 1 tank also to fail. The message came in the form of a sharp bang and vibration. Next, the warning lights indicated the loss of two of Apollo 13’s three fuel cells, which were the spacecrafts prime source of electricity.

Then, the crew aboard the spaceship, and the entire NASA staff spent the next 5 Days, 22 hours, 54 min, 41 seconds working to get the three-man crew back to earth.

In the midst of this disaster this team of NASA employees demonstrated some leadership lessons that we can apply to our organizations (and lives) today.

1. You must be committed regardless - It has been said, “Teamwork is what makes the dream work.” A group of people working as one will usually get the job done and come out on top. This team of NASA employees couldn’t be any more diverse. Upon reviewing the team you see they are different in every way but one. They were different in age, education, experience, and agenda. But they all were committed to getting that spaceship back to earth in one piece and the crew back alive. Each team member demonstrated 100% commitment to his/her area of responsibility. In a time of disaster or crisis you simply don’t have time for diversions showing up in the form of team members trying to fulfill their own selfish agendas.

- Leadership lesson: Refuse to lose.

2. You must be willing to do what has never been done before - CapCom, the person responsible for the success of the mission, had to keep his staff believing they would not lose those astronauts aboard Apollo 13. His commitment was tested a few different times when his top leaders, letting human nature get the better of them, began to talk about the odds of getting those men back alive. As soon as he quickly put an end to this talk, his leadership skills were again tested with challenges such as the lack of power, oxygen, or water aboard the spaceship. As human beings it is easy for us to get comfortable and to settle for “what we have always done.” For your organization to excel past all others you must be willing to think outside the box. One such organization is the Natural Resource Network (NRN). This small organization is taking the nation by storm revolutionizing the small home-business concept. It used to be that if you wanted a small home-business to make a few extra dollars you had to get a “kit” and hit the road selling some product to every relative, friend, and enemy you could find. Since most people don’t enjoy this type of selling NRN is developing a way to have professional marketing agencies obtain customers for you. Your part is then to service that customer with the goods and services they need and want.

- Leadership lesson: Thinking outside the box.

3. You must be willing to look at your job and organization in a totally new way. NASA had to look at space flight, specifically this flight, in a totally new way. Not being willing would have ended in the death of those three astronauts. It is certain that your organization (even your life) will face challenges this year. How you view these challenges will determine your future success. While at the same time, how you view your organization (the values, vision, and mission) will determine its success.

- Leadership lesson: Your focus must be flexible in order to have your preferred future

Next month’s edition of Footprints and Monuments will explore in detail what it means to have a committed team that refuses to lose, a team that constantly thinks outside the box, with a focus on a preferred future.

Tardive Dyskinesia - What to Do?

Posted by admin - May 6th, 2009

It is a scary feeling any time a doctor tells you that you’ve got any kind of chronic illness. At first your mind wants to deny it, and then you steadily give into the shock of realizing that you actually do have anything wrong with you. Even if you’ve been exhibiting symptoms for ages, your problem just isn’t set in stone until the doctor tells you those fateful words : I am sorry to tell you, but the tests came back positive.

When the diagnosis is Tardive Dyskinesia [ TD ], it really shouldn’t come as any surprise. In truth, it may be be a relief, because after you know what the issue is, there are thngs you can do to turnaround the condition, and you definitely need to do that. Perhaps you have been afflicted by the humiliation of your tongue popping out of your mouth every couple of seconds or of making horrible grimaces that are out of your control. You may have had a lot of distressing physical symptoms, like neck spasms or involuntary twisting of joints. Don’t believe anyone when they tell you that you will just have to live with the problems, because they wouldn’t want to if they were in your place. Instead, here is what you can do.

To start you can learn everything there is to know about Tardive Dyskinesia class action lawsuit. Infrequently it is just good to have somebody you can talk to about your condition who will understand and offer recommendations for what you must do next. Contacting the Foundation will put you in contact with caring folk who can help. You may also visit their website at www.dystonia-foundation.org.

Another group which will be ready to offer you the information and help you want is We Move which is a support group for people with movement disorders. This organization has groups throughout the world. You can find the closest group by going to their web site at www.wemove.org. Folks who have developed Tardive Dyskinesia have filed successful suits, and lots of other court actions are in process. If you are diagnosed as having TD after taking Zyprexa [ Olanzapine ], Risperdal [ Risperidone ], Seroquel [ Quetiapine ] or many other neuroleptic drugs, you may be in a position to file a lawsuit seeking compensation to help you suffer thanks to the losses you incur because of the filed successfully against doctors prescribing medicines known to cause TD. However, it’s yet to be seen if lawsuits against the giant pharmaceutical companies who produce the drugs will be settled in favor of patients.

There are several doctors who have researched TD and know the right kinds of treatments that will reverse the symptoms of the disorder and bring relief to patients. If your folks surgeon isn’t ready to provide you with this type of assistance, you can contact a psychiatrist instead who has experience working with the side effects of anti-psychotic drugs. In addition, you will find that a neurologist can properly treat your Tardive Dyskinesia.

What We Can Learn From J. Paul Getty

Posted by admin - May 2nd, 2009

J. Paul Getty planned to enter the U.S. Diplomatic Service, but, when he got out of college, the Oklahoma oil boom caught his attention. Since his father had already prospered in the oil business, he was irresistibly attracted to the prospects of wildcatting, and he decided to postpone his diplomatic ambitions for two more years.

He worked on other wildcatter’s rigs and borrowed money from his father to raise money for oil speculation. His father only gave him small amounts of money and demanded prompt repayment.

J. Paul Getty spent his money frugally, and also saved money through haggling over prices.

At first his speculations did not go well, and a diplomatic career looked increasingly inviting. Then, early in 1916, he secured a bargain price of $500 on a lease and the well he sank produced 700 barrels a day. Suddenly, at the age of 23, he made a fortune.

Years later, journalists would ask him about his lucky beginning. They wondered how he knew that the well was so rich. He responded that he had gathered all the necessary geological facts from experts and the spot appeared to have been a good one.

“But,” he added, ” as for actually knowing what the outcome would be that was impossible. If there were a way to be a hundred percent sure where rich oil deposits are, nobody would ever sink a dry well.”

“Oil prospecting is like any other venture in life, from getting married to buying a car…there is always an element of chance, and you must be willing to live with that element.”

“If you insist on perfect certainty, you will never be able to make any decisions at all. You will simply paralyze yourself.”

Be the Samurai Sword

Posted by admin - May 2nd, 2009

Relationships are constantly facing crisis. Everywhere we look people are in dispute with one another. Companies are in dispute with one another. Countries are even in dispute with one another.

Arguments, litigation, divorce, even war are the products of relationships in crisis.

What is the purpose of fuelling animosity? Life is so short. It’s too short to waste precious time with such unproductive pursuits. Do we really need to keep conflict going? What can possibly be achieved by constantly fanning the flame of conflict? But people do it.

When one party has the strength to step back, conflict, or the escalation of it, can often be avoided.

Strength? Yes I did say strength. It takes strength and courage to take the first bold step of reconciliation and peace. Some might consider such a move as being soft or weak.

Allow me to give you an example of strength borne through softness.

The samurai sword, or katana, as it is more correctly known, is made of the strongest steel. Made hundreds of years ago in feudal Japan, many examples of these swords are still in pristine condition. They will stand up to the very best modern steel making technology of today.

The katana gets its strength from the many separate and symbiotic processes that the sword smiths of the era employed. (Re “The Craft of the Japanese Sword” - Kapp and Yoshihara - ISBN 0-87011-798-X - for more information)

One of the most important qualities is the katana’s soft malleable inner core. This embedded soft steel inner core allows the weapon to absorb outer hits on its striking surface without serious damage.

There is little doubt that the katana was a fearsome weapon in its time. It still is. Yet at its heart lies the softest metal giving the weapon its greatest strength.

You can learn to be like the samurai sword. You can develop strength through softness. Be the samurai sword.
